PERSONAL STORY

By Kirby Drake

When I first stepped into Urban Jungle Self Defense, I was carrying more than just extra weight. I was 260 pounds and stuck in a cycle of bad habits—poor eating, heavy drinking, and smoking. I wasn’t just out of shape… I was lost.

But what pushed me to make a change wasn’t some big life event. It was a moment with my best friend Jacob. We were at the shop, and he asked if I wanted to spar. I said yes—and tapped out in less than a minute. I felt powerless. That was my wake-up call. I knew I had to take control of my life.

Facing Day One

Day one was rough. I was nervous just walking in, and I barely made it through the warm-up. I was completely out of shape and totally overwhelmed.

But something unexpected happened—Tony and his family made me feel like I belonged. So did everyone else on the mat. It didn’t matter how out of shape I was—they encouraged me, supported me, and made me want to keep coming back. That’s when I realized: this isn’t just a gym. It’s a family.

Changing my lifestyle didn’t happen overnight. Fixing my diet, cutting back on drinking, quitting smoking—those were uphill battles. But every time I showed up to train, I got stronger. Mentally and physically.

Little by little, the weight started coming off. I went from 260 to 208 lbs. I quit smoking. I barely drink now—maybe once or twice a month. I feel better, move better, and think better. I’ve got strength and flexibility I never thought I’d have again.

Stronger Mind, Stronger Life

The physical transformation was great—but the mental shift is what changed my life.

I’m calmer now. I don’t let little things get under my skin. My thinking is clearer, and I make decisions with more confidence. That mindset shift has helped me grow in every part of my life—at home, at work, and within myself.

I’m a better husband. A better father. A better friend. I’ve even seen the impact in my sales career—I lead with more clarity, more presence, and more purpose.

A Gym That Feels Like Home

What I love most about Urban Jungle is the people. The energy. The growth. There’s something powerful about showing up every day and pushing yourself—surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you win.

The sport-based classes are my favorite. I never got the chance to play sports growing up, so every session feels like a gift. And I wouldn’t be where I am without the support of Tony, Joseph, Jacob, Jose, John Burns, Brendan, and Shalen. Each one of them has played a part in my journey.

One of the most meaningful moments for me? My wedding. My wife comes from a big family—I don’t. But the Urban Jungle crew showed up for me. That meant everything. That’s how I knew—this is more than just training. These guys are family.

Advice for Anyone Thinking About Joining

If you’re thinking about joining Urban Jungle, stop thinking—just do it.

This place will change your life. The team genuinely cares. They don’t just train you—they build programs around you. What you learn here—about discipline, confidence, resilience—you carry for life.

PERSONAL STORY

My Fitness Journey at Urban Jungle:

A Personal Story

I’m thrilled to share my experience as part of Urban Jungle Self Defense’s “Fight2BFit” project, which celebrates the incredible achievements of our community members. My transformation through Urban Jungle has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life, and I hope my story inspires others to embark on their own paths toward better health and well-being.

Discovering a New Drive

My journey began when my son, Sebastian, started training at Urban Jungle. While waiting during his classes, I decided to make better use of my time and joined Michelle’s cardio kickboxing class.

“Since we don’t live nearby, I would spend my time waiting,” I explain. “When Sebastian started attending an advanced class, it didn’t make sense to drive back and forth. I was already exploring the Heights trail, so joining Michelle’s class felt like the perfect way to stay active.”

Initial Impressions

My first class was a mix of excitement and challenge. I remember it vividly: “The energy was fantastic! I used to hear the music from downstairs while students rushed in. My class was upstairs, so I never saw what was happening below. On my first day, I claimed a spot in the back right corner and just jumped in.”

Conquering Challenges and Celebrating Victories

I’ll be honest—starting was tough. I wasn’t in shape, and Michelle’s class was intense, even for seasoned participants. At my heaviest, I weighed 244 pounds, but I refused to give up. Over the course of three years, with regular classes and dietary changes, I lost nearly 100 pounds, hitting a low of 148 pounds at one point. Now, I hover around 155, and I couldn’t be prouder of this achievement.

Beyond the physical transformation, my confidence soared. Kicks I once dreaded became my strength, and every session brought me a sense of accomplishment. The camaraderie with others in the class was incredibly motivating, and I even got to share this experience with my family. Friday night kickboxing sessions with my husband and son became a cherished routine.

The Power of Community

Urban Jungle’s supportive community made all the difference. The friendships I formed and the accountability I felt from my family kept me going, even on the toughest days. Tony and Michelle welcomed me like family, and I’m forever grateful for the bond we’ve built. This journey taught me that with effort and support, I could achieve results far more fulfilling than shortcuts like surgery or medication. It changed my perspective on fitness, making exercise an essential and enjoyable part of my life.

A New Beginning: Skin & Body Work
by Amanda Barrera

My journey at Urban Jungle also inspired a personal milestone—starting my own business, Skin & Body Work by Amanda Barrera. With over 20 years of experience as a licensed esthetician and massage therapist, I decided to take a leap of faith after my father’s illness reminded me of the importance of family.

“I needed to be more available to my family,” I share. “When the opportunity presented itself, I trusted the signs from the universe, turned in my notice, and started my business. It was the best—and hardest—decision I’ve ever made.”

Jose Reye’s Inspiring Journey:

With Urban Jungle Self Defense

Hi, I’m Jose Reyes, and I’m excited to share my journey with Urban Jungle Self Defense as part of their “Fight2BFit” initiative. This is my story—a journey of transformation, discipline, and incredible support that helped me become the best version of myself both physically and mentally.

Finding My Motivation

Growing up, I struggled with my weight. By my senior year in high school, I was 315 pounds, and after graduating, my unhealthy habits pushed my weight up to 330 pounds. As a magician, my confidence often wavered because of how I felt about my appearance.

Things began to change when my friend, Daniel Fernandez—a fellow magician and someone I deeply respect—encouraged me to take control of my health. Together, we committed to supporting each other on a journey to better ourselves. When I started searching for fitness programs, I found Urban Jungle Self Defense, and I decided to give it a shot.

Stepping Into the Gym

Walking into Urban Jungle for the first time was intimidating. I felt self-conscious about my size and remember borrowing training clothes that didn’t fit me properly. But everything changed when I met Tony. His energy and motivational teaching style inspired me to shift my mindset.

One pivotal moment stands out: during training, a 110-pound practitioner was able to control me effortlessly. That experience was a wake-up call. Despite my size advantage, I realized Jiu Jitsu was more than theory—it worked. That moment fueled my determination to keep coming back.

Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Success

The beginning wasn’t easy. Flexibility, breathing, and endurance were all major obstacles for me. But with consistent training, I started to see improvements. Six months in, I had lost 130 pounds.

Two years later, Daniel and I set a bold New Year’s resolution to run 100 miles. With no prior training for long-distance running, we managed to complete 54 miles in 28 hours—essentially an ultra-marathon. That experience taught me the power of pushing beyond my limits.

Transforming Physically and Mentally

Jiu Jitsu has changed my life in ways I never imagined. Physically, I feel like a different person, and mentally, my confidence has skyrocketed. Urban Jungle became my sanctuary, a place where I built incredible friendships and countless memories.

Why I LOVE URBAN JUNGLE

One of the things I love most about Urban Jungle is the variety. Every instructor has a unique teaching style, and as a family-run business, the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive. The sense of community made a huge difference for me, especially when I was just starting out.

Even when I barely knew anyone, the people there cheered me on. That kind of encouragement is rare, and it’s one of the reasons Urban Jungle feels like home.

A New Confidence as a Magician

The transformation I’ve experienced at Urban Jungle has carried over into my work as a magician. Losing weight and building endurance has opened up new possibilities for my craft. I’ve even incorporated challenging stunts like endurance-based acts into my performances, something I couldn’t have done before.

My love for magic began seven years ago after watching a magician perform a simple but stunning trick for a police officer. That sparked my curiosity, and I started learning through YouTube tutorials. Over time, I dug deeper into the art, studying classic magic books from the 1950s and 60s, and adding my personal twist to old-school effects.

Six years into my journey, I decided to pursue magic full-time. It’s been a challenging road, but also incredibly rewarding. Lately, I’ve been pushing my limits even further by mastering the art of sword swallowing and other intense acts.

Advice for Anyone Thinking About Starting

Taking that first step into the gym was the hardest part of my journey. But once I did, I discovered I was closer to unlocking my potential than I ever thought. If you’re considering starting Jiu Jitsu—or any fitness journey—don’t wait. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you surround yourself with the right people and take the leap.

My story is just one of many at Urban Jungle. I’m forever grateful for the community, the discipline, and the lessons that have transformed my life. If you’re ready to start your journey, I promise you won’t regret it.
